PISA chief says there is no purpose in teaching children how to code PISA chief says there is no purpose in teaching children how to code PISA chief says there is no purpose in teaching children how to codeSchoolsThe PISA chief has announced that coding, a recent addition to the UK`s national curriculum `will be outdated very soon.` PISA is the OECD`s (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) Programme for International Student Assessment, an independent institution that assesses every three years 15 year old students from all over the world in reading, mathematics and science. The results from this study are useful for ranking countries, and can provide convienent information at a glance. In the most recent results, which saw Singapore coming top in all categories, the UK did not perform particularly well, falling well outside the top 15 positions in reading and science, and only managing a dismal 27th place in mathematics. Andreas Schleicher, the Chief of PISA, has suggested that coding is a fad, a `technique of our times` and that it is very unlikely to have any longevity as a core subject. I must say that these comments are rather surprising to me. Coding is now part of the national curriculum, replacing the rather undefined and nebulous `IT` subject in 2014, and is taught to all pupils in some form from the age of five. It seems somewhat strange to me that someone would suggest that the subject might be phased out anytime soon - just about every aspect of our lives is infused with computers and technology, from business, social interactions, to education itself. Our reliance on technology is expected to increase exponentially over the next few decades, and with this there will surely be a concomitant increase in demand for IT specialists. Coding is just about as important an IT skill as one can possess - if you can code you can make an app, design and build a website, and perform many more vital tas ks related to the IT sector. Why then is Andreas Schleicher, a statistician and researcher in the field of education, suggesting that there is no real point in teaching coding? In a speech he gave at the World Innovation Summit for Education (Wise) in Paris last month Mr Schleicher made the point that coding is a contemporary pursuit, and unlikely to become a permanent or core subject: `Five hundred years ago we might have thought about pen literacy. In a way coding is just one technique of our times. And I think it would be a bad mistake to have that tool become ingrained.` `You teach it to three-year-olds and by the time they graduate they will ask you, `Remind me, what was coding.` That tool will be outdated very soon.` I think it`s highly unlikely that coding will vanish from the classroom within the next 10 or 15 years - indeed I will make the prediction that it will become ever more ubiquitous, an even more important part of the curriculum in the coming years. Of course in the future there may be developments that make programming more approachable - there may even come a time when a system is invented that would enable someone like myself to code, though this may be dreaming of the impossible! just using a word processor is stretching my technical abilities to their limits! Mr Schleicher`s point seems to be that he would prefer coding be taught with a view as to its application, rather than in some abstract way: `I would be much more inclined to teach data science or computational thinking than to teach a very specific technique of today. The trick is to teach fewer things at greater depth that is really the heart of education success.` Speaking recently at the World Innovation Summit for Education (Wise) in Paris, Mr Schleicher compared coding to trigonometry, which apparently has uses that don`t apply anymore. Just with this comment I believe Mr Schleicher has shown his lack of judgement - tell any structural engineer or architect that trigonometry no longer has any use, and they may look at you askance, waiting for the punchline of the joke. Not to mention its protean practical applications - from navigating to surveying - it is a core part of geometry. Mathematics will always be valid, will always have `application,` be it in pure or applied domains. For Mr Schleicher to suggest trigonometry is no longer useful suggests to me a grave misjudgement on his part. If this misjudgement extends to his predictions about coding only time will tell, but I suspect we will soon be teaching our children about logic gates along with teaching them their times tables. 12 months ago0Add a Comment

Whether positive or negative, change is an inevitable part of maturing and expanding your perspective of the world. As an introvert, change can be extra scary and overwhelming, but many introverts eventually adapt to the situation and carry on with life as usual. However, some have a difficult time adjusting to a strange environment, and this issue may prove more serious than slow adaptation. If youve recently gone through a significant change â€" such as moving or graduating â€" and you feel its impossible to overcome your emotional distress, you may have adjustment disorder. Luckily, its not hard to treat, and it often doesnt last longer than a few months, which means youll soon be on a path back to your regular life. What Is Adjustment Disorder? Adjustment disorder is a mental health condition that arises after a significant life event. Symptoms appear within three months of the stressor and are exclusively associated with it. The disorder usually resolves itself within six months of the events occurrence, although some people struggle with it longer than others. The incident causing adjustment disorder doesnt have to be a one-off situation, either. Ongoing stressors like poverty or an abusive home can encourage it and make it last for many months. Six types of adjustment disorder exist â€" Adjustment disorder with anxiety. Adjustment disorder with depressed mood. Adjustment disorder with anxiety or depressed mood. An individual with unspecified adjustment disorder may have physical symptoms like insomnia, body pain and indigestion. How Will I Know I Have it? If you experience a major life event and are unable to cope even after utilizing stress management strategies, you could have adjustment disorder. For a doctor to diagnose you, they must determine your reaction as disproportionate to the severity of the stressor. For example â€" moving to a new city is stressful, but if it makes you so anxious, sad or angry that youre unable to complete daily tasks, this reaction likely exceeds the event. You may experience crying spells, bouts of anger, or urges to act impulsively. If you have other mental health conditions that affect your mood, you may be feeling the effects of these and not adjustment disorder. Adjustment disorder shares symptoms with many other mental health conditions, so your doctor needs to distinguish your symptoms to ensure they fit the criteria. Always check with your doctor for a professional opinion. How Can I Treat It? Although this disorder can take a severe toll, treatment is generally uncomplicated. Doctors approach it with talk therapy â€" also called psychotherapy â€" which occurs over a short- or long-term basis. Group therapy helps you connect with other like-minded people and builds a support system. Psychiatrists will sometimes prescribe antidepressants or anxiety-relieving medication, although these treat the symptoms and dont eliminate the disorder itself. You can also utilize self-help techniques such as online manuals if you dont have immediate access to a doctor. Keep a journal dedicated to your stressor and write down what you think and feel about it each day. Explore the situation from different perspectives and familiarize yourself with it. Success at your medical school interview can hinge on subtle components of the day that you might not even consider to be influential until it's too late for damage control. Several of those points were covered in my last Varsity Tutors blog entry, which included two important topics that I called You can check out anytime; but you can never leave and Thats amore. Please also take a look at my July Varsity Tutors blog entry on medical interviews for advice on how to Let your story show your glory and how to Fake it until you make it, and my August entry emphasizing that You can run; you can hide; but you cant escape. Now, lets review some more nuances of the interview day. Shiny Happy People Holding Hands In an effort to attract desirable applicants, some medical schools invite candidates to social events immediately before or during the interview day. These events may include dinner, lunch, or an optional hospital tour with students.Some institutions will even offer an optional happy hour the night before to meet the schools current medical students. It's in your interest to attend these events; they show schools that you are serious about their programs, afford you the opportunity to score social points, and allow you to gain valuable information about students' satisfaction. These events are also an opportunity to get to know other applicants whom you might end up seeing next year as fellow class members. Finally, the social events allow you to relax a bit and perhaps even get to know the city surrounding the school. However, there is a caveat youll want to know before you attend these events: Ensure you act professionally, and disregard promises that what you say will not affect your candidacy or get back to Admissions. Even if everyone has good intentions, information garnered from these events can make its way to decision-makers. If you had a bad experience at the interview day, hate the city the school is in, or know your first choice is a different school, these social events are not the time to reveal that information to current medical students. Don't unwittingly provide the torpedo that sinks your candidacy. Importantly, this rule is especially pertinent for those applicants who choose to stay at students houses or dorms. Be friendly, but dont blab. Keep your ears open to hear what students think are the pros and cons of their institutions, but dont feel obligated to share your negative opinions. Remember that once you are accepted, you can always be more explicit about your concerns and ask frank questions to current students. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away Speaking of being frank, applicants have valid personal reasons for considering an institution less desirable than another. These may include family or health concerns, or a significant others opinion or career. Certain personal details are not the business of the interviewer and are considered off limits. However, if you are sitting in a small room with a faculty member whose opinion will largely affect your professional future and you are asked a personal question, it may be hard to maintain your privacy. When I was interviewing for residency, an interviewer asked me if I had a boyfriend. As it turned out, he asked all of the women who interviewed that day that exact same question. (We spoke to each other confidentially after the interview day had ended.) Why would the interviewer pose an illegal question like this, and what should you do if you are asked? Likely, the interviewer is trying to get a sense for whether you are serious about an institution. If you have a significant other or children, their concerns may affect your decision-making. Again, this line of questioning is illegal and distasteful, but, sadly, there are still interviewers who might pose these questions to assess your interest in their institutions. If you are asked these types of questions, you can simply answer if it's not objectionable to you, or respond by addressing the intent of the question without revealing personal information. For example, you could say, I think what youre asking me is whether I am serious about this medical school, and I can assure you I would be thrilled to receive an acceptance and matriculate here. Alternately, you can also decline to answer the question; of course, this tactic might cost you the position you are seeking as unfair as that is. (In my case, I answered the question, but then mentioned the incident to a faculty member at my school who had trained at the residency where I had been interviewed. The faculty at my school later told me the interviewer had been dismissed from his admissions responsibilities.) Next month, Ill offer more tips on the medical interview process.
